Forex EA VPS Requirements Calculator

Estimate the CPU, RAM, storage and latency requirements for running MetaTrader Expert Advisors on a VPS.

  • For MT4 and MT5 Expert Advisors
  • Estimate resources by terminals, EAs and charts
  • Choose VPS location based on broker server, not your home location
  • Educational infrastructure guide only - not financial advice

A VPS helps keep MT4 or MT5 online when your local computer is off, sleeping, disconnected or rebooting. It does not make a trading strategy profitable.

Quick VPS Sizing Reference

Use this table as a fast starting point before testing the exact EA load, chart count and latency to the broker server.

Setup CPU RAM Storage Notes
1 terminal + 1 simple EA 1 vCPU 1-2 GB 25-30 GB SSD Basic MT4/MT5 setup
2-4 terminals 2 vCPU 4 GB 40 GB SSD Good baseline for small EA portfolios
5-8 terminals 4 vCPU 8 GB 60 GB SSD Keep CPU/RAM headroom
Scalping / news EA 2-4 vCPU 4-8 GB 40-60 GB SSD Prioritize latency to broker server
Heavy indicators / dashboards 4+ vCPU 8-16 GB 80+ GB SSD Monitor CPU and RAM usage
Backtesting / optimization 6+ vCPU 16+ GB 100+ GB SSD Better on separate machine

Latency and Datacenter Guidance

When latency matters

Latency is the time between the VPS and the broker trading server. For swing trading and lower-frequency systems, stability usually matters more than ultra-low ping.

For scalping, news trading, arbitrage-style systems and fast copy trading, choose a VPS close to the broker server and measure ping before deciding.

Common broker-side hubs

  • LD4 / LD5 for London-area infrastructure
  • NY4 / NY5 for New York-area infrastructure
  • TY3 for Tokyo-area infrastructure
  • Frankfurt and Amsterdam for many European routes
  • Singapore and Sydney for Asia-Pacific routes

How to choose the right location

  1. Ask your broker where the trading server is hosted.
  2. Check the broker server name inside MT4 or MT5.
  3. Ask VPS providers for test IPs in relevant cities such as London, New York, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Singapore or Sydney.
  4. Run ping or traceroute tests from your local machine before buying.
  5. Pick the VPS with the lowest stable latency, not just the cheapest plan.
  6. Retest during active market sessions, not only during quiet hours.

MT4 / MT5 Setup Notes

Why use a VPS

Expert Advisors only run while the trading platform is open and connected. Use a VPS so MT4 or MT5 can stay online when your local computer is off, sleeping, disconnected or rebooting.

A VPS improves availability and consistency. It does not fix poor strategy logic, bad risk management or broker-side execution problems.

MT4 versus MT5

MT4 is still common for legacy Expert Advisors. MT5 is newer, 64-bit and often used for newer systems. The hosting principles are similar: Windows compatibility, enough CPU/RAM, low latency when needed and a clean installation.

What affects resource usage

  • Number of MT4/MT5 terminals
  • Number of charts
  • Number of Expert Advisors
  • Number of indicators
  • Number of symbols in Market Watch
  • Number of open trades
  • EA complexity
  • Log volume
  • Market volatility
  • Backtesting or optimization workload

Operations checklist

  • Use Windows Server and Remote Desktop for the simplest MT4/MT5 workflow.
  • Install each MetaTrader terminal in a separate folder.
  • Configure startup recovery carefully after reboot.
  • Monitor CPU, RAM, logs and free disk space over time.
  • VPS provider comparison coming later.

Optimization Tips

  • Close charts you do not need.
  • Remove unused indicators.
  • Hide unused Market Watch symbols.
  • Lower maximum bars in chart/history when possible.
  • Do not run browsers or unrelated apps on the VPS.
  • Monitor CPU and RAM in Windows Task Manager.
  • Keep average CPU and RAM usage below around 70-80%.
  • Use auto-start carefully after reboot.
  • Keep logs under control.
  • Test every EA on demo before live use.

FAQ

What is a Forex VPS?

A remote Windows server used to run MT4, MT5 or other trading software 24/7.

Do I need a VPS for an Expert Advisor?

You need one if the EA must run continuously and you do not want to depend on your personal computer, home internet or electricity.

How much RAM do I need for MT4 or MT5?

For one light terminal, 1-2 GB can be enough. For several terminals or multiple EAs, 4-8 GB is more realistic. Heavy setups may need 12-16 GB or more.

Is 1 vCPU enough for Forex trading?

For one simple terminal and a light EA, yes. For multiple terminals, scalping, dashboards or heavy indicators, use 2-4+ vCPU.

Does latency matter for Forex EAs?

It depends. For swing EAs, less. For scalping, news trading, arbitrage-like systems and copy trading, yes.

Which VPS location should I choose?

The one closest to the broker trading server, not necessarily closest to your home.

Can I run multiple MT4 terminals on one VPS?

Yes, but install each terminal in a separate folder and monitor CPU/RAM. Do not overload the VPS.

Should I use Windows or Linux?

Most traders use Windows Server because MT4/MT5 and many commercial EAs are designed for Windows. Linux/Wine can work for some users but is less beginner-friendly.

Does a VPS make an EA profitable?

No. A VPS only provides infrastructure. Strategy quality, risk management, broker execution and market conditions still matter.

Is this financial advice?

No. The site only explains VPS infrastructure for trading software.
